If lip colour is one of my favourites in makeup, Rouge Coco Shine is no doubt one of my favourites in lip colour. It has everything I like about lipstick. A hot sleek and small packaging, a wet shine and a comforting feel about it. It’s almost perfect, given that perfection is not to be quite achieved, so that we always have something to strive for.
This little black thing can give me tons of joy at any time. I just need to reach out for it.
The thing to know about this lipstick is that it has a distinct rosy scent about it. I’m not a fan of scent in makeup. Especially in products I wear on my lips. But this scent is delicate and doesn’t really bother me.
I love sheer lipstick formula so much. I want it all – lip gloss shine and lipstick texture. And with Rouge Coco Shine I get it all. To me, this lipstick, this formula is really special and really well done. Any time new shades come out, I check them out and have a lot of fun doing that. This formula has the perfect balance of all right elements.
The colour range is fine, because so many limited editions show up I don’t really have to limit myself in terms of shades. There are so many of them. And more every season. The permanent range seems to have undergone some changes since it came out first. Some shades seem to have disappeared. And some limited editions don’t have a ‘limited edition’ label on them anymore, when I look at Chanel website. If we put it all together, we get a panoply of shades that will suit any taste.
Let’s look at the ones first that have been on longest and are definitely permanent and available to get.
Initially Rouge Coco Shine range by Chanel was divided into four parts: roses/pinks, reds/corals, violets/berries and neutrals/browns. And that’s how we’ll roll 🙂
Oh, and before we get to it – in parentheses here I have what Chanel themselves call these shades and how they define them.
Roses/pinks:
Chanel Rouge Coco Shine in Boy 54 (natural rose) is a purple pink with fine little silver sparkle.
A great shade that looks too complex to be super flattering but proves to be just that.
The one that Vanessa Paradi showed off in the very first Rouge Coco Shine commercial, you know, the one where she’s whistling 🙂
This shade is rare and is a magic wand almost to have at hand. In addition to all the other assets, this is one of those shades that attunes to you as opposed to trying to attune you to fit it. That is, everyone will look different wearing Boy, which is great. The opposite is just boring 🙂
Chanel Rouge Coco Shine in Romance 55 (bright pink) is a cooler bright pink, fuchsia on tiptoes kind of pink.
A great brighter shiny pink that a lot of people would love.
It’s the kind of fresh pink, bright without being crude, happy in a way, that I keep coming back to.
There’s something really girly and romantic about it in a very very good way. Something easy and pretty. Something spring like that can last all year round. To put it simply, this here is one of my favourite shades of Rouge Coco Shine. It’s right up there with Boy 🙂
Chanel Rouge Coco Shine in Chance 56 (powder pink) is a very light pink with a good coverage, which is rare, usually such light pinks are much more sheer than this.
The fact that it’s sheer, but not too sheer, makes this shade kind of dangerous. It’s not universally flattering. Which is a pity, because it’s so cute 🙂
You have to be careful with it though and make absolutely sure it’s your shade before you wear it.
If you pull it, you’ll be one of the few who do. So, lucky you 🙂
Chanel Rouge Coco Shine in Aventure 57 (shimmering pink)
In its core Aventure is a warm coral pink with golden sparkle.
Nice shade. I like it. One of those pinks we all wind up using from time to time, if we do use pinks in principle.
Warm, summery in a way, goes well with tan and brown and mustard colour outfits. Pretty natural and a good thing to go to at the times, when you’re just so fed up with those cool fuchsia like pinks you can’t take it anymore 🙂
Chanel Rouge Coco Shine in Evasion 48 (sheer rose) is the one pink or rose that used to be part of the initial range but seems to be gone now.
It’s a nice batch of pinks and roses – cooler, warmer, classic, artsy, it’s all here.
And who doesn’t love pink? Well, Ok, Ok, some people don’t. I do, if for nothing else then for it being as different as it is here 🙂
Left to right here in both pinks pictures I have: Boy, Romance, Chance and Aventure.
Reds/Corals:
Chanel Rouge Coco Shine in Sari D’eau 44 (coral shimmer)
Coral? Not really. This is orange. It’s bright. And has golden sparkle to it.
In fact, this shade is bright to the point, where I’d say I’d put a more neutral coral on a permanent range of shades.
Although personally, I like this bright shiny orange. It’s sheer enough where you can probably operate it successfully, even if it seems too bright to you at first. An elegant take on coral in a little bit of an edgy way. A reddish coral. And if it’s too bright for you, look into the next shade on the list 🙂
Chanel Rouge Coco Shine in Liberte #46 (sheer apricot)
Yes, this is a more classical coral shade.
More calm, so to say. Not as vibrant and intense as Sari D’eau.
A nice warm lip shade with some golden sparkle to it, but not too much. The kind of medium coral you can wear at any time. A coral go to shade, if you prefer corals to pinks.
Chanel Rouge Coco Shine in Monte Carlo 62 (pink red)
It is a pink red, which makes it more or less raspberry in a pretty shiny diluted kind of way.
There’s a lot of pink in this raspberry, and it’s shining from within, so it not dark. But it’s definitely a bright shade.
Although I’d say it’s more pink than red, if I have to swear by my definition.
Chanel Rouge Coco Shine in Rebelle 63 (orange red) is the one that seems to have dropped out of the range.
The interesting thing here is there’s not a single truly red shade in the whole batch. Weird, isn’t it? 🙂
I love shiny reds, although some people tend to think it’s too much, that is red and shine is too much for one shade. Some cute corals though in this part 🙂
Left to right here in both reds/corals pictures I have: Sari D’eau, Liberte, Monte Carlo.
Violets/Berries:
Chanel Rouge Coco Shine in Unique #51 (sparkling plum) is a golden purple shade.
It’s golden all the way, it has golden sheen and then golden sparkle on top of it. Which makes this purple shade more wearable for those who don’t like it when lip colour is too purple.
On the other hand, this warm golden plum shade won’t look good on everyone. In fact, all shades with a lot of gold in them are not flattering across the board. So, be careful.
But if it looks good on you, it’s a very festive shade, so to say.
Chanel Rouge Coco Shine in Elise 59 (berry rose) is a warmer plum with definitely some pink in it. And just a little bit of sparkle.
It’s a good medium bright colour. The kind that works well on multiple occasions.
There’s enough pink in this shade to attract those who aren’t that keen on purple proper.
Still it’s berry in essence. So, if you want something not too plum, go for Unique.
Chanel Rouge Coco Shine in Bonheur 61 (berry plum) is a cooler purple shade. This here is definitely purple. There’s no way around it 🙂
This shade has a portion of sparkle wrapped in it, but this portion is small enough to work more to bring out the shade than to really sparkle.
If Eise is more plummish, Boheur is more purplish.
I can’t say I’m ecstatic about plums and purples in general, although I do wear them sometimes, but this shade here is a good one for sure.
Chanel Rouge Coco Shine in Fetiche 51 (rose) is the one that I think is off the permanent range now.
These here are well picked and mature in a good way purples.
They aren’t crazy. They are softened, sophisticated and well rounded. And I love that golden one 🙂
Left to right here in both violets/berries pictures I have: Sari D’eau, Liberte, Monte Carlo.
Neutrals/Browns:
Chanel Rouge Coco Shine in Canotier 41 (pearlized nude beige) is a cool beige with a whole lot of pearl in it. A lot. Really.
This shade looks beautiful. But there’s a major catch in it.
Such heavily pearly light shades like this beige don’t look good on all of us. Actually, there are a lot of people these shades don’t look good on.
If it were a less pearly nude beige, it would be more wearable. As it is, if you’re lucky, and it works on you, yay! If not, well, there are other lip shades in this world…
Chanel Rouge Coco Shine in Deauville 67 (delicate nude brown) is a weirdo shade, really 🙂
If Canotier is something we see sometimes in makeup ranges, especially in a less pearly version, this here is a rare thing.
It’s a dark cooler beige. With a silvery sheen to it that makes it almost lean to greige. And that’s a lip shade 🙂
Yeah, I know. I mean, once again – are there people out there who can make it work? Sure. Are there a lot of thos people? No, definitely, not. So, the key to this shade is handle with care.
Neutrals/Browns part of the range lost most shades or so it looks. Maybe, hence the two remaining ones – Canotier and Deauville – are so not what we’ve come to expect, when we hear neutrals. The three shades that were also here but are not listed as part of the range are: Chanel Rouge Coco Shine in Biarritz 42 (coppered beige), Chanel Rouge Coco Shine in Bel Ami 66 (plum brown), Chanel Rouge Coco Shine in Cavaliere 65 (shimmering brown).
This is the strangest part of the whole range. I guess all the more neutral shades got lost somehow, and we wound up with two really weird shades.
Now, weird doesn’t always mean bad. It’s can be good. It can mean artsy, special, out of the common run. But boy, these are two odd men out in the nude lip colour world for sure 🙂
Left to right here in both neutrals/browns pictures I have: Canotier and Deauville.
There seemed to be another shade in the range, that’s not part of it now, and that I can’t even find Chanel description of 🙂 How very mysterious of it.
Chanel Rouge Coco Shine in Escale 49
These are the initial permanent shades of Chanel Rouge Coco Shine still standing. There are some worth looking into. Left to right: Boy, Romance, Chance, Aventure, Sari D’eau, Liberte, Monte Carlo, Unique, Elise, Bonheur.
I’d say, this range is not quite a traditional one. Some shades are pretty much what permanent lip colour ranges usually are, but then there are some surprises. And most importantly, each and every shade provides the shine and the soothing feel I appreciate so much about this lipstick.
And the best thing is that’s not all there is to it. There are those shades too that were released within limited seasonal collections and that are still available in stores and that aren’t even said to be limited anymore on Chanel website. So, who knows, maybe, we’ll see all of those shades or some of them in their permanent range sometime? They are worth it. I’ll write about them tomorrow.
P.S. Ana, I know it took me a long time to come up with this post 🙂
Thank you!!!!
