This collaboration of MAC and American singer and actress Ariana Grande – or else, two collaborations 🙂 – made me think about this big dilemma of lipstick and lipgloss and combining them in one makeup, say, topping one with the other. Before I get to this dilemma though, let’s look at the products in both collaborations to see what they are all about. Both mini collections have two items in them. One lipstick shade and one lipgloss shade. By the look of them, they are very different. One is all about contrasts, light play, vampy and nude clash. The other one is all about romance, modern romance and baby doll. Only you know what suits your style best. Also, keep in mind that we wear different styles nowadays, that our looks and outfits are often about fusion, so different style makeup can come in handy from time to time. Anyway, here are two versions of MAC Viva Glam Ariana Grande. By the way, Viva Glam is something worth considering, because the collection name is supposed to set the mood and direction for the whole batch. So, viva, glam, huh? 🙂

The first one. The only difference in terms of boxing here from permanent range boxing design is Ariana Grande’s autograph printed in red on it. In everything else MAC black and white design stands.

img_4349

There’s no shade name. Instead it says here Viva Glam Ariana Grande.

img_4353

The tubing is all black and MAC like, only the lettering on it and the stripe under it is red, the same shade of red as the autograph on the boxing.

img_4363

When I look at the bottom of the tube, I make sure there’s no shade name there, but I do get a new piece of information. It says that this shade is matte. Oh, and there’s the number. A85.

img_4381

More limited edition design of the tube. This red inside and yet again the autograph. This time around it’s printed in black.

img_4385

The shade is all femme fatale like and black cherry. This version of black cherry by MAC is very deep and dark and purplish. Hot as hot can be. It being matt makes it even more sultry. There’s no sheen of any kind here to soften it up. It’s uncompromisingly vampy. There’s a retro feel about it because of this matt texture and dark colour. You have to like deep and intense lip shades to be able to manage it efficiently and to come to love it. This shade is one of those that have to rule the ball. It will be the centerpiece of your makeup and look. And you’ll have to build it all around it.

Here are the things you need to know about this lipstick, if you like the shade. It’s professional, and we all know what it means. It means that there’s no extra lush scent, feel or kick to it. It all about how it works, how it behaves on the lips, how it lasts. As a result, it’s a solid professional quality, but if you’re used to luxury market brands and are looking for more, a little bit of something pleasant on top of the shade and performance, you might miss it here. Also, you need to know that this lipstick has a typically MAC very very sweet scent to it, so, if you are scent sensitive, please, be careful.

On we go. Lipgloss. Or else, lipglass, as MAC calls it. Lipglass. I like that J Ariana Grande’s autograph in red is in place.

img_4421

And again no shade name. Just Viva Glam Ariana Grande. It’s a pity, by the way. I like shade names, especially fun ones.

img_4449

The tubing is transparent lipgloss tubing with MAC like black cap and lettering, and behold, here’s the autograph in shiny red.

img_4455

A glance at the bottom of the tube, yep, no shade name. Viva Glam Ariana Grande. And here’s the number – B75. It’s nice to have some kind of reference. And this number is all we’ve got.

img_4669

The shade is on the opposite end of spectre from where that matt lipstick shade is. If the lipstick was all dark and matt, this lipglass shade is all light and shiny. It’s sort of a throw back to the nineties, when super light pearly pink lipgloss and lipstick was ever so trendy. On top of that, there’s tiny pink golden sparkle in this lipgloss. It’s a very tender and a very delicate makeup option. It can be shy. Or romantic. Or womanly. Or nude with kind of a girly and coquettish twist to it. Also, there’s a certain freshness in this lipglass shade, it looks fresh and nice and preppy in a way. Perk and cute.

If you’re into this lipglass shade, here’s some info for you on it. It’s very shiny, and there’s little colour in it. The colour proper is diluted very much with all the gloss and sparkle. This gloss is very professional in its feel and its ways. It works just fine for what it is and gives you what you expect. The brush is a sponge with an indent on one side. That is, its tip is slanted to make application more comfortable for you. The sponge is pretty small, on the shorter side and doesn’t have any extra softness in it. Oh, and this signature ever so sweet scent is still here, in this lipgloss too, so beware, if you are not a fan.

That’s our first MAC Viva Glam Ariana Grande lipstick and lipgloss duo. It seems its motto is opposites attract. What can be more opposite than a matt dark lipstick shade and a shiny, glossy and sparkly light pink shade? You might even ask yourself, how the two actually correspond? I think I have an idea, but I’ll save it for later. Let’s see the second duo first. Then we’ll talk more about it.

img_4403img_4455-2img_5007

MAC Viva Glam Ariana Grande 2. I thought I’d see two in some form on the boxing here, but there’s none. Only the red autograph, nothing else indicating it’s the second Viva Glam set.

img_4349

You wanna take a guess on the shade name? What shade name? – you’re asking. Good for you 🙂 Viva Glam Ariana Grande 2 is all there is on the box.

img_4509

The tubing is no different from Viva Glam Ariana Grande tubing. It’s black, and it has the red stripe, and MAC is written in red on it.

img_4363

On the bottom of the tubing I don’t even expect to see the shade name now. But I wanna find that shade number to know what it is, in case I ever try to find it or something like it again. It’s A46. And it’s matt.

img_4527

If you liked the tubing design in Viva Glam Ariana Grande, you’ll like this one too. It’s black, and the red inside and the autograph in black is still in place.

img_4541

The shade is nothing like the more or less classic black cherry from the first Viva Glam Ariana Grande. The only way it’s the same is texturewise. It’s matt too. But it’s bright and vivid and modern looking in a way. It’s purple pink. Or pink purple. It’s one of those shades where the two colours are mixed in even or almost even proportion. So, what you see in it will majorly depend on your colour perception. This shade is not as linear as the black cherry. You can play it a bunch of ways. Baby doll, romantic, modern vampy – you pick. Or, maybe, you want to be one of those today and something else tomorrow. Why not? 🙂

img_4561img_4565img_4579img_5007

Well, and just to remind you shortly… The quality is professional, naturally, because it’s MAC. And the lipstick is scented, the scent is pretty strong and sweet. So, keep it in mind.

And… lipgloss. Ok, Ok, lipglass. Black boxing with white lettering and red autograph by 🙂 Ariana Grande.

img_4421

You know how it goes by now. There’s no shade name here. Any shade name. You know what it says on the packaging. Viva Glam Ariana Grande 2.

img_4593

Here’s the tube. We can see the shade through it. Hm. Interesting. I would expect it to be different. And the tube is… well, it has a black cap and an autograph, and it’s red. You know 🙂

img_4601

I still wish there were shade names in this collection. As it is, there’s only Viva Glam Ariana Grande 2 on the bottom of the tube. And the number is A46.

img_4651

If we go by what we saw in the first duo, the lipstick and lipgloss are opposites. That is, there’s a big contrast going on there. Or not? Not in Viva Glam Ariana Grande 2. Here the two shades are like two different takes on the same pink purple or purple pink thing. If the lipstick is all matt and bright and vivid and everything, the lipglass is shiny, sheer, still, it’s purple pink, or else, pink purple. There’s markedly more purple here. Although I think it’s possible to see cool pink here, if you really want to 🙂 What’s also here is just a handful of silver lilac sparkle. This shade is romantic moody, which is rare, so it’s a good one 🙂

img_4619img_4601-2img_4629img_5007img_4637

And real quick… Lipglass by MAC does have that mirror shine to it a lot of us appreciate, it’s professional quality, the brush is spongy, and the scent is very sweet.

That’s the second MAC Viva Glam Ariana Grande lipstick and lipgloss duo. It’s very different from the first one. The shades are not the opposites. They are more like two various approaches to one and the same colour. If you like this colour, you have it all covered here for you: matt, shiny, casual, special occasion, everything. So, enjoy.

img_4561img_4601-2img_5007

Ok, so you’ve seen it all now. MAC Viva Glam Ariana Grande and MAC Viva Glam Ariana Grande 2. Now let’s talk about what these are really about. There are two ways to go here. Treat them as two different shades for two different moods, two kinds of looks, two sides of you. One – the lipstick – is bolder, more sultry, more conspicuous, while the other one – the lipgloss – is more tender, more romantic, more casual. And then you can do what I implied up front in my post. You can top lipstick with lipgloss. Seemingly, it’s a good idea. The vampy black cherry will get all shiny and sparkly and even more clubby, and the bright purple pink will get radiant and a little softer, maybe, once you top them with a matching lipgloss.

img_5007

Both are good things. But… there is a big but here. It sounds so good in theory. Topping lipstick with lipgloss. There are so many options there. A whole world. But it just never works perfectly for me. When you start applying lipgloss over lipstick, it gets either smudged or whatever else, but it just never easily and flawlessly works altogether. And that lipgloss just doesn’t get distributed evenly enough on that lipstick. For me, at least, something always seems to go wrong. Topping one thing with the other is not easy. And I’ve tried many times, trust me 🙂 My own and personal conclusion is – it’s better to get colour and shine in one product than have it separately. In two steps. Your conclusion might be different, just be forewarned that it can prove to be a little harder than you think, eventually.
